PLACES IN LADAKH
 
Kargil KARGIL
Kargil, the headquarter of Kargil district, is around 204 Kms. to the east of Srinagar and 234 Kms. to the west of Leh. It was a transit point of caravans on their way to and from China, Tibet, Yarken and Kashmir till 1949, but since 1974 with the influx of tourists the region has been replaced as centre for tourism related activities. Here people were followers of Buddhist religion till the 14th century AD. Presently, Kargil is inhabited by Muslims of Shia sect.

Dah Hanu DAH HANU
Dah and Hanu are places on the far side of the great Indus River on the far side of Leh. Surrounded by the great Hindu - Kush mountains and peopled by a hardy but gentle people who have a bank of strange legends to relate for the weary traveler's ears. Living in almost sheer isolation, Dah and Hanu, the two villages can be accessed only by a really bumpy road ride, which skirts a sheer cliff face with the river flowing fast and furious below.

Nubra Valley NUBRA VALLEY
Nubra Valley Known as Ldumra (the valley of flowers) is situated in the north of Leh. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The main attraction in this area is the Bactarian Camels (Shaggy double hump Camel) around sand dunes, Diskit and Samstanling monasteries.


Zanskar Valley ZANSKAR VALLEY
The remotest places on our planet often offer the most adventure and it is not different that the Zanskar Valley situated in one corner of India in the Western Himalayas offers its fair share too. To reach Zanskar valley, one can take one of the many flights to Delhi and then from Delhi, you can either fly to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region or drive to Leh through the highest series of mountain passes in the world.

Suru Valley SURU VALLEY
The Suru Valley forms the mainstay of Kargil district. Lying nestled along the north-eastern foothills of the great Himalayan Wall, it extends from Kargil town, first southward for a length of about 75 kms Upto the expanse around Panikhar, hence eastward for another stretch of nearly 65 kms up to the foot of the Penzila watershed where the Suru valley rises


Sankoo valley SANKOO VALLEY
A picturesque expanse surrounded by colorful rocky mountains, Sankoo is an upcoming township with a small bazaar (42 kms south of Kargil) and numerous villages around. Dense plantations of populars, willows, myricarea and wild roses fill the bowl shaped valley, giving it the ambience of a man-made forest tucked within the mountain ramparts. Two side valleys drained by large tributary streams of the Suru river, the Kartse flowing from the east and the Nakpochu descending from the west, open up on either side of the expanse.

Diskit Monastery DISKIT MONASTERY
Diskit in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir is famous for its 14th century monastery, believed to be the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra valley. Diskit is situated at an altitude of 10,310 ft above sea level, at the edge of desert on Shyok valley. Among the larger villages, Diskit is the administrative centre of Nubra valley. The valley was an important stopover on the caravan route between Tibet and China.

Thiksey Monastery THIKSEY MONASTERY
There is an interesting tale of the events that led to the building of Thiksey monastery: Jangsem Sherab Zangpo with his disciple Palden Sherab were performing a votive prayer services containing Tormas (ritual cake) to the local deities at lower part of a valley called Arzoo, which is about 3 km away from the present monastery.

Lamayuru Monastery LAMAYURU MONASTERY
125 km west of Leh, Lamayuru monastery was founded in the 10th century. According to a popular folktale, Lamayuru was once a lake. A Lama once blessed the place so that it caused the waters of the lake to recede up to the mountains and left the place for the monastery to be built. This monastery is in utter ruins and only its main hall stands to this day housing numerous Tankhyas.


Shanti Stupa SHANTI STUPA
Shanti Stupa of Ladakh is located on the hilltop at Changspa. It can be reached quite easily from the Fort Road. The Stupa was constructed by a Japanese Buddhist organization, known as 'The Japanese for World Peace'. A magnificent white-domed structure, the Shanti Stupa of Leh Ladakh offers spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset. The stupa looks best at night, when it is beautifully illuminated with glittering lights.

Alchi Monastery ALCHI MONASTERY
Around 67 km from Leh, a small village by the name of Alchi is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh region. Standing on the banks of river Indus, the monastery, Alchi Monastery, is also known by the name of Alchi Choskhor. The significance of the monastery also lies in the fact that it is the only one that has been built on a flat ground. The monastery complex houses two main temples - Alchi Du-khang and the Sum-tsek.

Hemis Monastery HEMIS MONASTERY
Hemis Monastery is the largest monastic institution in Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa Lineage or the Dragon Order of Mahayana Buddhism, with His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa as its supreme spiritual head. Gyalwa Gotsangpa Gonpo Dorje (1189-1258), a main disciple of the 1st Gyalwang Drukpa, Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorje (1161-1211), and one of the most celebrated yogis in the Himalayas, came to Ladakh in the 13th century and established the Drukpa Lineage here.

Ladakh offers adventurous trekking tours. The attraction here for the tourists are snow clad peaks, translucent lakes, barren terrain etc. The best season to go on trekking tours and expeditions in Ladakh in this region is between July and September. Ladakh offers adventure trekking trips. This is setup between two of the world's greatest mountain ranges, Himalayan and the Karakoram.

Camel, also known as the Ship of desert, is the major mode of transportation in desert. They are also known as the lifeline for the desert people. Many people who know that camel Safari is taken only in the hot deserts of Rajasthan, will be surprised to know that camel safari is carried out in the cold deserts of Ladakh also. Tourists can enjoy the soft adventure of camel safari in Ladakh in the months of July, August and September.

River rafting in Ladakh is quite unlike anywhere else in the world.
